Jamie discussing driving green on BBC Radio Gloucestershire

Before you start

You need to be at a legal age to drive :

The minimum age that you can legally drive a car on public roads in the UK is 17.

If you´re disabled and receive mobility allowance, the minimum age is 16.

You need to get a provisional licence:

This can be applied for online here or can be obtained by completing a D1 form which is available from most Post Offices or can be ordered here. If you would like to start lessons on your 17th birthday the licence can be applied for up to 3 months before your birthday.

The current cost of a first provisional licence is £38.00 (for a car, motorcycle, medium/large vehicle, minibus/bus). It is also worthwhile having an eyesight test to check that you meet the minimum eyesight standard for driving.
